President’s Message

Dear Members,

Thanks to an early spring, our golf courses are in great shape. The Regions Tradition tournament has everyone energized and ready for the celebration. I am confident our team of professionals and volunteers will leave visitors and guests with a great impression of our community and Club. Our aggressive membership campaign is the backbone of all our efforts. Through innovative marketing ideas, a small but focused sales team supporting our staff, and a beautiful facility that sells itself, new members are coming in at record levels. Visitors are seeing our vision for Greystone and want to be a part. We should all be very proud. I want to personally thank Mercedes-Benz of Birmingham for their partnership in the Campaign to Reach 1,000. I can think of no better partner on a road to excellence than Mercedes-Benz. Keep in mind, transforming our culture to one of excellence requires much more than great ideas. We must continue to manage and execute a challenging plan. This requires long hours, hard work, hard decisions, and above all a flexibility to know when we are missing the mark and make

What an exciting time to be a member of the Greystone Golf and Country Club family. A couple of years ago, we collectively agreed to shift our focus from just sustaining to transforming our Club. We made the decision to move forward and not sit idle; to challenge ourselves with hard work and not rest on circumstances; to make the difficult decisions and not waver in our dedication to excellence. I am proud to report that your commitment and support continues to bring us closer to that goal. Now, as never before, we are united in our efforts to be a “Platinum Club” and THE premier private golf club of the southeast. We have more work to do, but I encourage you to enjoy the rewards along the way. The opening of the new Cellar 91 restaurant is a major accomplishment. With a state of the art kitchen, professional staff, beautiful décor and a diverse menu, it goes a long way to define our commitment to excellence. Please take the time to enjoy it with family and friends.

General Manager’s Message

horticulturist who has installed several new beautifully filled pots around the Founders Clubhouse. This winter you probably notice the painted fairways which enhanced the visual appeal of the courses as awell as earlier transitions of turf from warmer soil temperatures. Director of Golf Course Maintenance Jason Miller is a tremendous leader. Fitness– Todd has added several new service improvements and programs to the wonderful facility, plus adding excellent team members. We are seeing almost double the number of visits to your state-of-the- art fitness center compared to the first quarter of 2016 versus 2015. Tennis– Kristjian and Ryen have added several new programs and we upgraded the physical plant. They have had 600 more players through the first quarter versus 2015. Pool– Last year, we made several improvements to the pool areas, including the Pool Grill. We have some more exciting things planned this season with visits from Steel City Pops, an extended afternoon schedule once school begins, more activities and a new menu for the Pool Grill. Food and Beverage– We hired key staff members over the last year, including Chef André Halston, Catering Director Lynette Roberts, Catering Manager Helen Humphreys and Restaurant Manager Brian Lasota. We are starting to see the impact of these top professionals raising the standards in events and now Cellar 91. This will continue with more training and upholding our standards. other big improvements

Dear Members,

Wow! How fast a year has gone by since I arrived at Greystone. I have had some time to reflect recently and I am so proud of what our Board and Staff have accomplished in such a short time. We have put solid business improvement practices in place, as well as improving in each department. We are hiring top quality team members in each department with a high level of standards to be met. I am pleased to report that each department has been through significant change and improvement: Golf– The restructuring of the team under Steve Smith’s leadership has been an excellent change. Service levels have improved, revenue from golf outings has increased, and our professionals have identified opportunities for improvement and implemented enhanced standards & procedures at their new home course. Golf Maintenance– The Club has a brand new fleet of equipment; improved course conditions are becoming more apparent each day. We hired a skilled

include St. John moving to a supervisory role, Plaza bar becoming a full service outlet, and new beverage carts negotiated into the equipment lease. Administration– We changed our budgeting process to be break even, implemented the Revenue Generation Program that allowed for no year-end dues recovery, promoted Mallory Bobba to Director of Administration, hired Sarah May as receptionist & Julia Olienyk at our Graphics Administrator, and upgraded the newsletter. We have also developed new hiring practices and a quarterly review process. Membership– Ashley has hired a sales team of three individuals to grow the membership by extreme percentages. They have been setting record numbers. We have an updated and upgraded membership brochure as well as a brand new Player Development Membership. Additionally, the staff attended lifestyle expos to attract out-of-state residents to Birmingham/ Greystone. We’re excited to announce a redesigned Greystone website to include the entire Greystone community (residential associations as well) and a real estate section. Furthermore, the Club hosted several successful prospect receptions, and launched our membership Reach 1,000 campaign. These are just some of the high level improvements we have made so far and there are so many more to come. The team is focused on the details of the operation as well as continual improvement now that the foundation is built. In addition to the operational improvements coming forth, we have some large efforts being made for programs and events.

The opening of Cellar 91 has been successful and following the tournament, we will begin weekly specials, specialty nights, and live music. The Regions Tradition has been a great undertaking for the staff and we are so excited about the energy it has brought to the Club. The new services I discussed at the annual meeting and past newsletters will be coming in June. There will be a separate brochure coming to you in May to provide all of the details. We have created a new calendar of events that provides something for everyone and will be led by Helen Humphreys. As you have seen already, she will make each event something spectacular for you to enjoy. I am so proud and fortunate to be in this position at Greystone. In my 25 year career, this is the most excited I can remember being about the Club I led. We have a spectacular Club with wonderful members, so the sky is the limit on how great we will become.

We are becoming the talk of the city in the country club world and I hope we are making you proud!

Greystone Invitational

Once again the Greystone Invitational has proven to be a major stop for amateur golfers from around the world.

On April 15th, 2016 two of our most recent past Champions - Michael Johnson (2012) and our defending Champion Will Gordon (2015) - were both named to the 10-player team that will represent the United States against Europe in the upcoming Palmer Cup matches to be held June 24-26 at Formby (England) Golf Club. Each year the GI field produces worthy champions who are now playing and winning on the PGA Tour and other professional tours around the world. The Greystone Invitational began in 2001 with a mission to become a top-tier golf tournament with a strong mix of non-exempt and exempt players of various ages that would draw contestants from across the world and to contest the event on a well-prepared championship golf course. The tournament field annually reads like a Who’s Who of collegiate, local, national and international amateur golfers as they make the Greystone Invitational a key event on their summer competition schedule.

Michael Johnson (Greystone Invitational’s 2012 Champion) was selected to the United States team a day after being named a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist. Johnson is currently ranked fifth in the country in the Palmer Cup rankings and is having a record-setting senior season by winning a school record three tournaments.

He currently holds the lowest stroke average in Auburn University school history at 69.69 which also ranks first in the SEC and second in the nation.

His three victories in the PrimlandCollegiate,Mobile SportsAuthority Intercollegiate and the Schenkel Invitational are the most in a season in Auburn school history and his five career wins are second only to Jimmy Green’s six.

This past March, GI 2014 Champion John Michael O’Toole won his first professional event by capturing the PGM Clearwater Masters on the Asian Development Tour. O’Toole earned the winner’s prize purse of US $8,482 and received six Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points courtesy of his victory in what was only his fourth event on the region’s burgeoning Tour. O’Toole is the younger cousin of reigning ADT Order of Merit winner Casey who also played in several past Greystone Invitationals.

Past GI participant and Birmingham native Smylie Kaufman who just a couple of weeks ago played in the final group of the 2016 Masters along with Jordan Spieth. Kaufman became the second straight rookie on the PGA Tour to win last October 25, 2015 when he closed with a 10-under 61 and then waited more than two hours to see if anyone could catch him in the Shriners Hospital for Children Open.

That felt tougher than any of the seven birdies and one eagle he made over the final 11 holes at the TPC Summerlin.

for the tournament. For comparison purposes, normally this time of year we are single cutting greens daily, with either a double cut or a roll blended in a couple times a week, and relying more on automatic irrigation. The frequency of cut on the fairways, tees, greens collars, intermediates, and walkouts will be increased leading up to the tournament. They will be mowed daily both advance and tournament week. This will help increase the density of the turf, which will provide a better playing surface. The heights of cut on these areas will actually be pretty consistent with the norm for this time of year. Water will likely be restricted to manual irrigation during tournament week as well, as opposed to automatic irrigation at night. The target rough height for the tournament is 2” – 2 ¼”. This will depend on the density that we are able to establish this early in the season, which will be a challenge with the cool spring that we have had thus far. The normal height of cut for this time of year is 1 ½” – 1 ¾”.

Tournament Prep versus Daily Prep

We have spent a lot of time the first 4 months of the year on course improvement projects in preparation for the Region’s Tradition in May. We have put down over 85 plus pallets of sod, have spread almost 2,000 lbs of fescue seed in the secondary roughs, have put out over 100 tons of rock and stone for erosion and traffic issues, and made over 15 repairs on existing subsurface drainage pipes year to date. These projects have eliminated a lot of eye sores around the course. Now, as for tournament prep itself, the main differences for us will be an increase in mowing and rolling frequencies on greens, an increase in mowing of other shortgrass areas, an increase in the height of cut on roughs, and limited irrigation during advance and tournament week. The greens will be double cut daily during advance week. During tournament week, they will be double cut during the mornings and single cut and rolled in the afternoons following play. Additionally, we will utilize moisture meters and hoses to maintain a tight window of moisture levels on greens which will provide a firm, smooth, and consistent surface

morning dew removal on shortgrass areas, and different bunker raking techniques. The maintenance staff will work very long hours advance week and morning and afternoon shifts during tournament week. Each shift will require about 45 people to prepare the course, as opposed to the norm of approximately 25 for daily play. We will rely on support from the Legacy staff and over 25 volunteers from our peers in the turf industry to pull it off. We are very excited about this opportunity to showcase our Club! I hope you’re as ready for the Regions Tradition as I am. Ever since that fateful day back in ’05 when the tents came down I felt a little hole left behind that only the Regions Tradition can fill!

Things will definitely have a different flavor this time as the players with a few exceptions have never played or even stepped foot on the property. The early word on the street is that the players are hearing good things from the few that have experienced Greystone. Rocco Mediate said that the guys are really going to like it and will surely have a good time. I hope you’ll take time to come out and witness one of the biggest parties Birmingham hosts all year. Who knows you might even get the chance to see a golf tournament. In regards to tournaments, we have a couple of big ones coming up for Greystone Members also. We have the Tillie Bailey Memorial Invitational with the net proceeds going to Ovarian Cancer Research, the Greystone Men’s Member- Member Championship on June 11-12th, and Match Play Championship the weekend after the Regions Tradition. We have a new format for Match Play Championship on May 28-29th this year that is sure to make it a bit more fun and a bit easier to play since you won’t have to play almost 63 holes over one weekend. Golf Stewardship

Calling all Course Advocates!

We hope you will take part in our new Stewardship Program. It is designed to develop a culture of increased pride and ownership of the courses by the membership. Become a leader in course care among your peers. Each month starting in June, Director or Golf Steve Smith and Director of Golf Course Operations Jason Miller will host a two-hour program with classroom and on-course practical education. Each member who participates will become a Steward. Stewards will be expected to take responsibility as a Club leader to uphold the standards of care in the program and encourage all players in their foursome to uphold the standards they learned in the Program.

Dear Members, Golf season is officially here! In an effort to further improve our students, we’re increasing emphasis on coaching rather than just the traditional golf lesson. So what exactly does that mean? Well, golf is a game to be played and while the traditionally structured lesson environment is essential, it sometimes lacks the necessary transfer to course play. Why? Motor Skill Research suggests that once the skill is learned, true mastery and transfer comes from building that skill. That’s where coaching becomes so important. In order for the new skill to transfer to your regular golf, there needs to be an environment in which you can simulate on course shots and playing scenarios. We are introducing a variety of coaching and player development opportunities at both the Performance Center and Founders lesson tee. We still offer the traditional golf lesson, and while they are essential, complimenting them with a coaching program is highly recommended! From our beginner juniors through to our ladies and men’s programs, our programs are all offered in a FUN learning environment with Instructors always striving to find the best medium for the individual. We will also be bringing in some outside experts to offer their perspective on teaching. James Sieckmann (May) Mike Adams (June) and Carl Lohren (July) are all headed to the Stone this season. Summer is just around the corner and this year will bring several changes for the tennis department. We are excited to announce that we have revamped all of our junior programs for the summer. We will now be offering more classes with smaller class sizes that are centered on specific ability levels. We are currently in the process of searching for a new full-time assistant who can help us heavily in the junior development area! Please contact a pro to learn which class best suits your child! The summer is also the optimal time to top-dress the clay courts. As softcourt season ends and conditions dry out, we will be adding clay to all of our clay courts to improve the playing surface. Summer also means fun events like our Parent/Child Tournament and our first ever Pickleball event! The ladies will kick off the summer tri-level season starting in May and continuing through June.
