It is naturally our members that make Greystone Golf & Country Club the legendary place we call home. Couple the above achievements of Greystone G&CC with the amazing Greystone neighborhoods that are such an integral part of our club experience and you truly have something that has become “legendary”! Greystone has continually invested in its surrounding community, in our staff and the lives of our members. The Bruno’s Memorial Classic and the Regions Charity Classic have donated millions of dollars to local charities and the Regions Tradition continues to support Children’s of Alabama hospital and other organizations. Greystone has hosted an annual neighborhood fireworks show on the 4th of July for over 20 years and we have also held numerous musical events such as Groove on the Green and other community events.
"GREYSTONE – A LEGEND IN THE MAKING"
This was Daniel Corporation’s ambitious marketing tagline for Greystone Golf Club and the Greystone Community back in the late 1980s. Thinking back on that time, what would have made Greystone a “legend” in your mind? A world-class championship golf course designed by Bob Cupp? An impressive Scottish castle- inspired clubhouse surrounded
by beautiful homes nestled comfortably in harmony with nature and its bountiful wildlife? Maybe eventually just a nice pool with a couple of tennis courts? Now, fast-forward 30 years later and look around at what our Greystone Club has become! Not only did Greystone Golf Club quickly insert the words “and Country” to its name but we also grew our departments by improving our golf, swim, tennis, fitness, and dining ameneties. Our Golf features added: • The Legacy Course - A second world-class championship course created by renowned “Open Doctor” Rees Jones • Our Golf Performance Center - home to the PGA Teacher and Coach of the Year Mark Blackburn and the Blackburn Golf Academy • Constant improvements to two of the best practice facilities in the nation • Redesigned greens with improved Champions Bermuda putting surfaces at Founders along with new bunkering
3
Three years ago, Greystone increased our investment in our employees by creating Greystone University. In addition, our staff also continuously supports several local charitable organizations with their time and efforts. The list of our traditional member holiday events continues to grow as well! Our New Year’s Eve parties, Valentine’s Day dinners, Easter Egg hunts, 4th of July celebrations, Memorial Day and Labor Day offerings; Halloween Festivals and Christmas events like “Breakfast with Santa” and the Dickens Dinners, have quickly become family classics and are now favorites of our second generation of members! In 2021, we will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Grey- stone Golf & Country Club! As your President, it is an honor and a privilege to lead this celebration. An excit- ing addition to our celebration is the formation of a new Historical Committee! (See the associated article in this edition of The Stone News). Over the next year we will take a look back at our history, celebrate our successes, enjoy their associated lifelong memories and at the same time map out a course for continued success over the next 30 years! The Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and Committee members & our Administration and Staff have a renewed sense of passion and excitement as we make plans for the upcoming year and beyond. Our Club’s financial position is stronger than ever thanks to the financial leadership of your Board, your committees and our General Manager David Porter and his team. On behalf of the Board, the staff and our members, I would like to express our sincere heartfelt thanks to our 2020 President, Janice Folmar for her steady leadership and dedication to our club during the past year. When you see Janice, your club leadership and your staff in the coming days and weeks, please give them a heartfelt “thanks” and maybe even a socially distanced fist bump! You are also invited to attend the President’s Dinner on Saturday, January 16, 2021 to honor Janice Folmar and celebrate her dedication to Greystone.
No one plans on having to lead such a large organization through a worldwide pandemic on top of their regular jobs and family responsibilities. But through the efforts of your Board of Directors, those of our General Manager, our staff and of course our wonderfully patient and supportive members, we took a never ending line of storms and turned them into one beautiful sunset after another! A special “thank-you” to all of our new members who found it time to call Greystone “home” even during such challenging times. Welcome aboard! In all of our endeavors in life we should seek to reach our full potential. Every success worth obtaining takes a step of faith and sometimes grasping at goals that may seem beyond our reach. But it is only after taking those steps - and sometimes leaps - and making those often challenging decisions, can we look back and say that we were glad we made those choices. Every legend needs to be passed along in order to stay alive for future generations. Greystone needs to continually grow in order for our legend to survive. This fundamental need for growth can be found in numerous areas including creating new offerings, fine-tuning our present level of service, increased partnerships and service to our community, continued investment in our staff and constant improvements in our facilities. With the guidance of your club leaders, the teamwork of our staff and the support of our members, we can make sure that for many generations our motto will remain…
"GREYSTONE – THE LEGEND GROWS”
See you at the Stone!
Dale Gorham Club President, 2021

CALLING ALL GREYSTONE HISTORIANS!
IN ONLY THREE DECADES, GREYSTONE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB HAS CREATED AN IMPRESSIVE AND LEGENDARY HISTORY!
As part of our 30th Anniversary celebration in 2021, we are formulating a new, permanent-standing Historical Committee. This committee will assist in locating, collecting, studying, and preserving the historical records of Greystone and promoting the celebration and communication of our history to our members and the general public. The Historical Committee will be composed of at least five to nine (5-9) Greystone members including the Historical Committee Chairman who will report to the Board of Directors and the General Manager of Greystone. Mr. Dale Gorham has agreed to serve as the Chairman for the upcoming 2021 year. Committee members will not rotate in short terms as with our other club committees but will be expected to serve continuously as long as they are able to contribute to the work that is expected and are able to attend the meetings as required by the rules of the committee. Our plans are to hold our first meeting in February of 2021. One of the first goals of the Historical Committee will be to catalog what items may already be available within our own club files and those of our new Committee members. Once this list is created, we will post it on the greystonecc.com website and then call on our Greystone membership to fill in what is missing with the donations of their own items. So hold on to your treasures until we can determine if they are needed or not for our archives. The Committee will be looking for hard-working, dedicated members who may have experience – both past and present – with historical societies, libraries, museums and other various history related
activities and careers. It will be also be preferable, but not required, for committee members to have experience with digitizing documents, word processing, storage and preservation of historical items, display creation and some basic experience with social media.
The Historical Committee will be an exciting opportunity for our members, both young and old, to enjoy sharing their passion for history and at the same time preserving Greystone’s history for future generations. We hope you will join us in volunteering to serve on this worthwhile committee. For more information, please contact Mr. Dave Porter via email at dporter@greystonecc.com or call the Club at 205-980-2500.

GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
I hope you had a great holiday season!
We will be building on our momentum in 2020 with our Dining Programs. Cellar 91 will continue as a Family Casual Restaurant with more frequent changes in the menu and less of a southern theme, while featuring southern weekly specials. Amici will continue to be our fine dining a la carte Italian restaurant and we will improve what we have in place with specialty family nights mixed in. The Café at Founders will continue to be open 7 days per week from 6am-3pm. We will continue to offer seasonal specialty drinks and begin serving waffles on the weekends during breakfast hours and new homemade breakfast sandwiches. In early January we are launching online ordering for the café, pizza delivery and take-out orders from Cellar 91. We have some great social events planned for the first quarter, plus we will be offering several virtual events that are not listed at this time. We will launch these throughout each month and give at least one week’s notice for these events. Also, we are excited to offer Fun Nights in the Adult Grille at Legacy on Saturday nights from 8pm-11pm beginning January 9th. Our Membership team is continuing to work hard at growing our membership. We just finished a record year of new members coming in, which was amazing during such an unpredictable year. The young professional category was the membership group that grew the most. We are excited to continue this positive momentum into 2021 with your assistance. We will be working on some incentive programs for the members tied to our 30th anniversary.
Thank you for all of your support and engagement in the Club during such a challenging year. We are all ready for the COVID-19 pandemic to be behind us, but until that time we will continue making Greystone a safe heaven for your enjoyment. We have deferred renovations to the Tennis facilities the last couple of years for various reasons. In 2020 we were able to renovate all the har-tru courts, repair the fences, replace sprinklers, replace nets and windscreens. In early January of 2021 we will begin construction of the tennis clubhouse. The renovation will include expanded outdoor covered viewing for all har-tru courts, improved storage, an indoor lounge, a walk-up bar with staging kitchen for events, and painted interior and exterior. The project is scheduled to be completed by March 31. All the 2021 Committees have been established based on volunteers. All volunteers received their first or second choice of committee to serve on. The Chairs of the Committees for 2021 are as follows:
Finance – Dale Gorham, President Golf – Stephen Breaseale Swim, Tennis, Fitness – Caleb Kennedy Dining and Social – Patrick Werrlein Regions Tradition – Ron Stanfa Membership Marketing – Ron Houston
All my best for a happy and healthy New Year!
Regards,
Dave Porter General Manager

EXERCISES TO GET IN GOLF SHAPE FOR THE NEW YEAR
With the holidays upon us, most of us are in "sit around and eat" mode from a long, stationary year – not an ideal way to start the golf season. Luckily, 2021 is right around the corner to help get things going in the other direction. Promises get a bad rap for being hard to keep when they're made on New Year's Day, but this year is shaping up to be a banner year for resolutions. Especially ones related to your golf game.
“It’s more important than ever after this whole year of a sedentary lifestyle,” says Dalton Gillilan, Fitness Director at Greystone Golf & Country Club. “Not only does [that life- style] have inherent health risks, but it also wreaks havoc on the body as far as movement goes. Your swing quality is probably going to go down if you’ve been affected at all by the COVID-19 situation.” We’re all hoping to unwrap a healthy swing when golf resumes this spring, but that swing isn’t just waiting underneath the holiday tree. A proper golf swing starts with good physical fitness, and, according to Gillilan, you need to focus on both during this short offseason period.
DESIGN A FITNESS PACKAGE THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU! CONTACT OUR FITNESS TRAINERS: DALTON GILLILAN 205.986.5138 | JEORDON DUDLEY 205.475.6914 | JESSICA MARTIN 706.280.6215

Planks – “Everybody hates them a little,” Gillilan says with a chuckle – but they're great for increasing strength in the abs, arms, shoulders, and legs. “A couple cues,” Gillilan adds: “If you feel it in your low back, your hips are too low, so bring them up. If you feel it in your shoulders, that means your hips are too high, so bring them a little lower.” Lunges – Because lunges are great for flexibility and strength in the lower body, they can be particularly helpful for golfers. With their focus on balance, lateral lunges are good for opening up the hips and strength- ening legs, hips, and core. “If I have somebody that can’t do squats, lunges are going to open those hips up as well as strengthen the lower body,” Gillilan says.
BALANCE FITNESS WITH SWING TRAINING “ Don’t neglect your fitness or your swing, always include aspects of both in your training, no matter if it's in-season or off, ” says Gillilan. First on the resolution list, according to Gillilan, is a bit of realistic self-assessment. It's important to keep in mind your own level of physical fitness when preparing yourself for the coming golf season. “Start with where you are, not where you think you should be,” Gillilan says. “If you lack general fitness, focus on that for four to six weeks before adding sport specific things. If you are generally fit, focus on adding some specific rotational accessories.” For golfers, Gillilan recommends the TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) assessment, which can help you focus in on those rotational deficiencies. “We assess the hip rotation, shoulder mobility, thoracic rotation, head & neck rotation, and wrist mobility,” Gillilan says. “If you are a regular golfer, rotational exercise with [elastic] bands are very important. But if you don’t have a good general base of fitness, the rotational work is going to be minimally effective.” GOLF EXERCISES YOU CAN DO AT HOME The Greystone Fitness Center features great equipment for anyone looking to knock out some mobility and flexibility exercises. But if you're not able to get to your favorite fitness center, the key is to find some things you can do at home. Here are a few suggestions: Incline pushups – Gillilan suggests doing pushups on an incline for strengthening the arms, which do all the swinging on the course. Starting with your hands on the edge of your bed or the seat of a chair, scoot your feet back to enter a push up pose. “On the push up, go all the way down and touch the chest, pinching the shoulder blades together as you bring your chest towards the surface,” he says. “Then when pushing up, you’re going to keep the hips and feet down but lift one arm and rotate, opening the chest – like a T. This is better and more easily done on an incline than on the flat ground.”
Russian Twist – Seated on the floor with a heavy ball in hand, you stabilize the lower half of your body and rotate the upper half. Gillilan says it is one of his favorite exercises for strengthening the core and increasing flexibility, but it is often done incorrectly. “People move the ball around their body, but instead of rotating their body, they're moving their arms,” he says. “You don’t have to raise your feet. Keep the ball in line with the middle of your chest and rotate the entire upper half of your body.” If you're new to working out, two days at a time is enough to make progress with your fitness program. But as you progress, you get to the point where two days just becomes maintenance and you should add a day. With three days, Gillilan says you'll see the greatest return and longevity to your workouts. Because golf requires both fitness and skill, Gillilan recommends having a trusted trainer for each. “A trainer and a golf pro are the absolute best combination for getting the most out of your golf game.”
