President’s Message Greetings fellow members,
We’re in the heat of summer and rapidly headed into fall. Many of us are anticipating football season, kids going back to school, and sharing stories of some memorable vacations. Since this newsletter covers August through October, there’s a lot to discuss in this one page.We had a fantastic Regions Tradition in May with an exciting new champion, Steve Stricker. I had the chance to chat with some of the professionals playing in the Regions who said that our Founders greens were the best surfaces they play all year. That’s saying a lot. Greystone also got some great press from Golf Channel and other media about the beauty of our club and the spirit of our members. The “Heart of Greystone” also got some positive press. Those of you who participated in the Mother’s Day gift box project were featured on a great Golf Channel story, and we had spots on Finebaum and Talk of Alabama in addition to some great print and internet coverage. I’m so proud of what we did for the mom’s and their kids who were stuck at Children’s Hospital on Mother’s Day. A very special thanks is also to Gary and Mary Martha Parisher of Cheeriodicals, and to our sponsors, Regions, Alabama Power Service Organization, and our own Edgar’s Bakery whose generosity made the effort possible.
We also had some of the best golf, food, tennis and swimming events of the year and our members continue to make memories at Greystone. I hope you and your families have had a blast. Congratulations to all of our golf, tennis and swimming champions and teams.
Summer doesn’t give up easily in Alabama, so I imagine we’ve still got plenty of hot days left before autumn actually arrives. Our golf courses have performed beautifully throughout spring and summer thanks to our outstanding superintendents. The tennis facilities and pools have been teeming with activity. And still, there’s so much fun on the horizon. To name just a few… • Saturday, August 3rd we have Groove on the Green with a Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers tribute band. It’s always a great time for a charitable cause. • Saturday, August 10th we have the rescheduled Family Luau at the pool with a great fire and light show. • Then there’s Labor Day, several amazing food events, cooking classes and Halloween!!!
There are SO MANY great events over the next three months you’ll want to keep this newsletter somewhere handy to keep up.
There’s another event I want to pay some special attention to this year. From Thursday, August 22nd through Sunday, August 25th, Greystone Tennis hosts the Charity Steel Open presented by Kamtek. Brought to you by our members, Josh Coleman of Charity Steel and John Hackett of Kamtek, this is a world-class tennis event with some ranked players descending on our club’s tennis facility for top level tennis, lots of great food and drink, and tons of spectator fun. The field of 64 players already includes commitments from University of Alabama, Samford, UAB, professional players and some of the top junior players. You’ll be treated to men and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. Whether you’re a tennis player or not, this is a great event that benefits Smile-a-Mile. You’re invited every day, but there’s big fun on Friday night, Aug. 23rd with a doubles party, food, bar, music and an exciting atmosphere. Admission is just a donation of any amount to the charity. I urge you all to come out and support it. I’d like to take a few lines to recognize the leadership of this club. David Porter and his department heads continue to focus on excellence across the board. The quality of our service, our food and our facilities are at an all-time high. Our committee chairs and members give selflessly of their time and talents to represent all the members and every interest group. Thanks to you, Greystone is a better club with every passing month. Lastly, I want to recognize our board of directors. The amount of time our board spends on complex issues guiding the club is staggering. We just returned from a weekend retreat (paid for out of their pockets) in which we reviewed everything from financial performance to future plans of our club. There are good things coming. It’s an enriching experience working with these selfless people, and I’m proud to be a member of the team. From the staff, to the committee members to the board, thank you from me and all my fellow Greystone members. So, play your game, tennis or golf. Swim, work out, eat, drink, enjoy the company of friends and make Greystone the center of your social life. I can’t think of anything better. Hope I see you here! Matt Scalici Club President, 2019

General Manager’s Message Dear Members, I hope you are having a great summer at the Club. We are so excited about the energy at Greystone and all the wonderful programs and activities the team has planned. Please try and take advantage of some of the offerings inside this issue. The main floor of Founders is close to completion. New oak floors have been installed in the foyer, Trophy Room and stairwell to the Cellar. Additionally, walls have been painted and new furniture is in place. There are some additional accessories to arrive and the area rugs are still being made. We have put some temporary area rugs in place until their September arrival. The carpet in the Main Dining Room will be installed this fall and then new chairs for that room will be ordered. I hope you like what you see and feel proud to bring guests to the Club.
Jason is taking on a project during aerification of the Founders Course. The collars of the Founders greens will be cut down to original greens height using a laser leveling machine. The collar height of the earth should be the same as the green and
grass height of the collar higher than the green. Over time, the collar has become higher through topdressing, grass clippings, mechanical impact, etc. This process will be completed during aerification, but the regrowth of the grass through the existing ryzomes will take some time, so there will be a scalped look for about 4-6 weeks as the grass grows back. Jason will create a brief video to explain more details of the process and recovery, which we will email to all members. I hope you are enjoying our dining programs in Cellar 91, such as pizza delivery, happy hour, southern lunch buffet, Acoustic Fridays,Wine DownWednesdays and Family Night on Thursdays with Patio Games. We have new summer menus for lunch, dinner and dessert in Cellar 91, as well as a new wine list. The staff is working on an exciting new specialty cocktail list too.
Congratulations to our recent Greystone University graduates. Please congratulate them when you see them around the Club. Employees by department are:
Aquatics & Tennis Kerrie Johnson Kristijan Mitrovski
Golf Course Operations Carson Melton Hunter O’Mary Chase Samples Kris Shiflett
Membership/HOA Meg Boulter Channa McKenna Cindy Wyatt
Food & Beverage/Culinary Mattie King Keith Long Wojciech Mulier Russell Noyes
Steve Smith, Daryl Baxter and Chef Alan are working with our golf cart GPS company to implement the food ordering module. Our plan is offer on course ordering from your cart on #9 tee of both courses and the food will be brought to your cart as you make the turn. More information to come as we launch this new service. I would like to thank our President, Matt Scalici and the Board of Directors for a wonderful annual retreat held away from the Club recently. We discussed many strategic issues and operational challenges for the future. The Club is on a continual path of improvement. You have committed members serving on the Board who are focused on making Greystone the best it can be. They are so committed that they take three days from their family and pay their own way 100% to focus on the future of Greystone. It is an honor to work with them and the committees of the Club.
I look forward to seeing you around the Club.
Best,
Dave Porter General Manager

They say the Best Golf is in Autumn Think about it! You’ve had all summer to warm up & your game is at its prime. Our courses are in their best condition and the trees begin to develop their vivid reds & yellows. The air is crisp & less humid, and the sun hangs lower in the sky making it cooler. It’s true fall comes with plenty of distractions like work, family time, kid’s sports, and of course college football. So we reccommend you make sure to take the time to enjoy this beautiful time of year before it passes by. Register for a tournament or just schedule a tee time by going online or by calling our golf shop(s): Founders- 205.986.5125 or Legacy- 205.986.5160.
